Recently, while traveling, I witnessed a conversation with a woman who enthusiastically shared in a call about how her workplace celebrated Women’s Day (a day prior!) and the gifts she received. She added that her workplace organized a celebration for women employees, but she didn’t even know when Women’s Day was.

Her conversation not just surprised me but showed the perspective from the side of women, especially from rural sides who are unaware of the actual purpose behind this celebration.

In recent years, every March 8, we are habituated to celebrating Women’s Day through wishes, webinars, entertaining activities and gifts.

While it’s glad to see women being recognized and celebrated during this specific day, is this truly going to make a lasting impact?

Nowadays, there is considerable awareness about the necessity of giving opportunities and chances for women to thrive, especially among modern and educated individuals. But, there is minimal awareness of this for those who have limited or no access to formal education, especially in the rural parts of India.

A few days ago, I came to know about Ima Keithel (Mothers’ Market), Asia’s largest market exclusively managed by women in Imphal, Manipur. Around 5000–6000 women vendors sell a variety of food products, handlooms and textiles and this place is one of the most popular tourist attractions.

From the 16th century to the present date, this market has served as an example for showcasing women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship. This largest women-led market not just supports improving their country’s economy, but also helps women to gain financial independence and have greater control over their livelihoods.

There are other notable movements too which are led and managed by women in other states like Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

Although there are various self-help groups, welfare, and skill training offered to women in the rest of our states, we need more businesses and support systems which are accessible to everyone.

This will help women who belong especially from the rural areas, to actually explore, empower themselves and gain exposure in their respective fields. And most importantly, through these initiatives, they will become more aware of the true motive behind every Woman’s Day Celebration.

Additionally, as an individual, supporting women-led businesses and creating awareness about the need for empowerment can also bring real changes.

To sum up, Women’s Day shouldn’t be about one-day celebrations, gifts and events; rather, it should focus on creating opportunities all the way around for everyone, especially for those who lack awareness.

As we celebrate Women’s Day today, let’s ask ourselves: are we just acknowledging this day with recognition alone, or do we support each other throughout the year with our impactful actions?
