A journey from books to bricks.
In recent days, we have seen a rise in the importance given widely to education. Although this should be well appreciated and encouraged, we can see that the teachers are not given proper recognition for their work.
In cities, due to the vast growth of education and educational institutions, teachers are paid adequately, at least to some extent. But this is not applicable in a few rural and tribal areas, as they are given inadequate pay for their teaching profession.
A few days ago, I came across a video on social media where a teacher from a village who has pursued B.A. in English and completed her B.Ed., is working as a laborer.
With a painful smile and shattered dreams in her eyes, she says how her life took a drastic change from being a teacher to a construction worker.
She adds that the pay she received for her teaching profession was quite less compared to the pay that is given now for her current profession.
While I felt saddened to witness this condition of a deserving educator, it was an inspiration to see how soon she adapted and accepted the new change in order to manage her family’s financial needs.
The quality of good education is still questionable in the interior parts of a few villages. Amidst a lack of educational awareness, poverty, and improper infrastructure, schools in those areas play a major role in improving the lives of future generations.
But due to the lack of opportunities and not getting due recognition in the teaching profession, educators are obliged to give up their passion and profession.
To overcome these problems, especially in rural areas, the government should take the necessary steps to offer many chances and good pay for the teachers who are well qualified.
Private educational institutions should also emerge with decent fee structures and provide opportunities for the educators who are eligible and well trained for their institutions.
Even though the life of that teacher changed from chalk to cement due to the financial situation, I hope someday she will deserve the right opportunity to make a positive impact in society through the power of her education.
