Discovering Oneself

The importance of being vulnerable.

Blog post written by Nazia Tabasum A

Well, most of us hesitate and feel uncomfortable if we are asked to open up and speak about how we feel. It’s because we are often tired of hearing statements like “you are an emotional person; you are highly sensitive; you are emotionally weak,” etc.

The main reason is that we are scared of being labeled as weak people while expressing our emotions. Additionally, this society, by default, makes us believe that showing our vulnerability is a sign of weakness.

I have already shared in my previous blog post about how writing led me towards positivity and how it created a positive impact on my life.

Yet, in this post, I want to share what I learned from expressing my thoughts through words and how much it helps me to discover myself through channeling my emotions.

Until I started my professional life, I always had a good bond with my family, as I often used to share my happiness, sadness, fears, failures, etc. Since I became busy with my work life, communication with my family got gradually decreased. Thus, I developed the habit of keeping all my feelings inside rather than letting them out. This was mainly because I had a fear of being judged for being very emotional and sensitive.

But as I started to write, it was quite helpful for me to express my emotions without any hesitation. Although initially I had no courage to share my thoughts, opinions, and experiences through my writings, at one point I realized that this practice had significantly boosted my confidence and also made me more empathetic than ever before.

Self discovery“—I am always obsessed and excited about this, especially whenever I watch and read inspiring contents. But in reality, I stumbled and struggled to find practical ways that would lead to self-exploration. I finally figured out that penning my emotional thoughts and sharing them with others is the key to finding my true self.

We are always habituated to share positive emotions, like happiness, compliments, excitement, and enthusiasm, but when it comes to sadness, anxiety, fears, and insecurities, we step back and suppress those negative feelings within ourselves.

It is not mandatory to express these vulnerabilities verbally. We can also show those dark emotions through any means of artistic expression. This will not only have a huge impact on protecting our peace and mental health, but it will also help us identify our own individuality.
